What problems is the Great Barrier Reef facing?
The Reef is highly vulnerable. In the past three decades, it has lost half its coral cover, pollution has caused deadly starfish outbreaks, and global warming has produced horrific coral bleaching. Coastal development also looms as a major threat.

When was the Great Barrier Reef selected as a World Heritage Site?
The Great Barrier Reef was selected as a World Heritage Site in 1981. Up until 1999, there were four main zones in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. They were the Far Northern, Cairns, Central and Mackay/Capricorn sections. These zoning sections were created between 1983–1987.
